Hungarian model mistakenly jailed for 3 months in Italy now wants compensation!
A 24-year-old Hungarian model was imprisoned in Italy for drug trafficking even though she was innocent. The incident left deep scars and has shattered Gréta Gila’s dreams.
According to Index, the young Hungarian model wanted to travel to Tokyo to attend a photoshoot that could further the career of the Miss Hungary beauty contest winner.
Before she could board the flight to Tokyo, she had to travel to Rome and meet up with a designer who would give her the clothes she needed for the photoshoot in Tokyo. However, things did not go as smoothly.
Circumstances
Gréta Gila reported to Atv that she reserved a room at a hotel near the Fiumicino Airport where she waited for the designer. At 11 pm, someone knocked on the door. It was the designer with a suitcase, so Gréta invited her in and led the way to the room.
According to her account, when she turned around, the designer was on the ground, and officers in civil attire barged into the room, shouting “Police!”.
Atv writes that one of the investigators asked Gréta if she knew what was in the suitcase. From the situation, the model could deduct that it was probably not the clothes she was expecting.
Imprisonment
She recalled that one of the worst things was when she arrived at the Civitavecchia at midnight and was led to her cell seeing all the dark prison cells.
The report she gave to Atv says that she was informed by Massimiliano Scaringella, an Italian attorney Gréta’s mother commissioned to defend her daughter, that the supposed designer was the member of a drug trafficking ring.
The Italian police found 11 kilograms of cocaine in the suitcase, and to save herself, the designer said that the suitcase was for Gréta, the Hungarian model.
Gréta was allowed to talk for one minute on the phone to her mother who visited her several times and assisted her daughter in any way she could.
The model recalls that she met a lot of young South American girls who were trafficking drugs in order to earn some money for their families who have been living in poverty.
Gréta Gila said that she had cried a lot and suffered from panic attacks each time the cell doors were closed on her.
Falsified reports
The Hungarian model spent a total of 74 days in the Civitavecchia prison before the authorities dropped the charges, writes Hvg.
According to her accounts, Massimiliano Scaringella, her attorney, had found out that the police report that states Gréta had taken the suitcase was falsified.
Consequences
However, in the meantime, her photoshoot was cancelled, her other job offers were scrapped, and the three months she spent in prison damaged her mental health. She suffered from insomnia, panic attacks, and depression, Hvg reported.
After she was let out of prison, the Hungarian model was still not allowed to travel back to Hungary. She had to find housing and work in Rome for the next seven months, meanwhile, in the first two months, she had to visit the local police headquarters for questioning.
The pardoning letter from the Italian authorities arrived on December 17th, ten months after her arrest. That is when she could finally fly home.
The present
Gréta currently lives abroad with her partner. The model and her attorney sued the Italian state for €100,000 compensation for being imprisoned as an innocent.
According to the report of Atv, the trial for the compensation should have been held on the 22nd of February, but it has been postponed.
